Al Green made the comments Monday amid a row between Democrats and the Republican president, calling on a group of progressive Democratic congresswomen to “go back” to where they came from.
Trump was referencing Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib Michigan and Ayanna Pressley Massachusetts. “I will again, this month, bring impeachment to a vote on the floor of the US House of Representatives for bigotry in policy, harmful to our society,” Green tweeted.
Back in 2017, he forced a vote on impeachment, but failed to garner support from more than 58 Democrats.
“I’m a member of the House of Representatives, and I as a member can do something about it,” said the Texas Democrat at a press conference streamed on Facebook Live. “Each member of the House of Representatives can bring articles of impeachment to the floor of the House of Representatives. I’m here today to tell you, again, to bring articles of impeachment to the floor of the House of Representatives.”
This is while Democratic majority leader, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), is calling on lawmakers to back a resolution that would condemn the president’s “xenophobic tweets.”
“The House cannot allow the President’s characterization of immigrants to our country to stand. Our Republican colleagues must join us in condemning the President’s xenophobic tweets,” Pelosi wrote in a letter to House Democrats.
The California Democrat said the “forthcoming” resolution is from Reps. Tom Malinowski (D-N.J.), who was born in Poland, Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), and other Democratic members who were born abroad. The text of the resolution obtained by The Hill “strongly condemns President Donald Trump’s racist comments that have legitimized and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color by saying that our fellow Americans who are immigrants, and those who may look to the president like immigrants, should ‘go back’ to other countries.”
Omar, a Muslim congresswoman, was born in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu and immigrated to the US as a refugee, while the three other liberal Democrats were all born in the US.
“This is the agenda of white nationalists,” she said of Trump’s “blatantly racist attack.”
